This 64A galvanic isolator is designed to prevent electrolytic corrosion by blocking low-voltage DC currents that can enter your boat through the shore power earth wire. These unwanted currents can cause corrosion to underwater metal components such as the hull, propeller, and shaft.
Inside the isolator are two diodes connected in an anti-parallel configuration. This setup allows current to flow in both directions, but only once a certain threshold voltage is reached. The diodes conduct at approximately 1.4 V DC, ensuring that small galvanic voltages are blocked while maintaining safety.
The isolator is installed directly behind your boat’s 230V shore power connection. Its forward voltage is higher than the potential difference typically found between different metals, preventing conduction and stopping electrolytic currents from forming. However, if a higher fault voltage occurs in the AC circuit, the diodes will conduct, allowing current to pass through so that the residual-current device (RCD) can safely trip the circuit.
