If you sail in fresh water, you'll need a Magnesium shaft anode, as there is lower open circuit potential in fresh water. In addition, unlike zinc shaft anodes and aluminium shaft anodes, magnesium anodes react rapidly when exposed to seawater, which is why they should only be used in fresh water.
