Zinc Anodes

Zinc anodes are used to protect metal objects, such as boats, from corrosion by sacrificing itself through a process called galvanic corrosion. The zinc anode, which is made of a zinc alloy, is connected to the metal object and acts as a "sacrificial anode" by corroding preferentially to the metal object it is protecting. This helps to protect the metal object from rust and other forms of corrosion.

Zinc anodes are commonly used on boat hulls, rudders and propeller shafts in seawater, as well as lakes and rivers. Zinc anodes are heavier than aluminium anodes, although zinc anodes tend to corrode more evenly and completely than aluminium anodes, which erode unevenly with visible craters. In addition, zinc is a far less reactive metal than magnesium, which is why magnesium anodes cannot be used in the same (salt) waters that zinc anodes can.
